Agencies

As an organization with diverse functions, the U.S. Department of Labor carries out its mission through a number of offices and agencies. These are organized into major program areas, and headed by an Assistant Secretary or other official. You can also view the Department of Labor's Organizational Chart.

Office of the Secretary

Administrative Review Board (ARB)

ARB issues agency decisions in cases arising worker protection laws, including whistleblower and public contract laws

Benefits Review Board (BRB)

BRB reviews appeals of decisions under the Black Lung Benefits Act, and the Longshore and Harbor Workers' Compensation Act and its extensions—including the Defense Base Act.

Bureau of International Labor Affairs (ILAB)

ILAB strengthens trade agreements by addressing unfair labor practices around the world.

Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS)

The Bureau of Labor Statistics measures labor market activity, working conditions, price changes, and productivity in the U.S. economy to support public and private decision making.

Employee Benefits Security Administration (EBSA)

EBSA's mission is to ensure the security of the retirement, health, and other job-based benefits of America’s workers and their families. We accomplish this mission by developing effective regulations; assisting and educating workers, plan sponsors, fiduciaries, and service providers; and vigorously enforcing the law.

Employees' Compensation Appeals Board (ECAB)

ECAB hears appeals taken from determinations and awards under the Federal Employees' Compensation Act.

Employment and Training Administration (ETA)

The mission of the Employment and Training Administration is to contribute to the more efficient functioning of the U.S. labor market by providing high-quality job training, employment, labor market information, and income maintenance services primarily through state and local workforce development systems.

Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA)

The U.S. Department of Labor's Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) works to prevent death, illness, and injury from mining and promote safe and healthful workplaces for U.S. miners.

Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA)

OSHA's mission is to assure America's workers have safe and healthful working conditions free from unlawful retaliation. OSHA carries out its mission by setting and enforcing standards; enforcing anti-retaliation provisions of the OSH Act and other federal whistleblower laws; providing and supporting training, outreach, education, and assistance; and working collaboratively with our state OSHA programs as well as ensuring that they are at least as effective as federal OSHA, furthering a national system of worker safety and health protections.

Office of Administrative Law Judges (OALJ)

OALJ’s mission is to provide a neutral forum to resolve labor-related administrative disputes before the Department of Labor in a fair, transparent and accessible manner, and to promptly issue sound decisions correct in law and fact

Office of Congressional and Intergovernmental Affairs (OCIA)

The Office of Congressional and Intergovernmental Affairs (OCIA) serves to advance the Secretary’s mission by educating policymakers in Washington, throughout state and local governments, and in Tribal Nations about Department of Labor priorities

Office of Disability Employment Policy (ODEP)

ODEP's mission is to develop and influence policies and practices that increase the number and quality of employment opportunities for people with disabilities.

Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP)

Office of the Inspector General (OIG)

The Office of Inspector General (OIG) at the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) conducts audits to review the effectiveness, efficiency, economy, and integrity of all DOL programs and operations, including those performed by its contractors and grantees.

Office of Labor-Management Standards (OLMS)

OLMS promotes labor-management transparency by making available reports showing unions’ financial condition and employers’ expenditures for their activities in persuading workers during union organizing campaigns.

Office of Public Affairs (OPA)

Office of the Assistant Secretary for Administration and Management (OASAM)

The Office of the Assistant Secretary for Administration and Management (OASAM) provides the infrastructure and support that enables the U.S. Department of Labor to perform its mission. OASAM provides leadership and support for information technology, human resources management, procurement, business operations, safety and health, space management, civil rights, emergency management, security, budget, and performance.

Office of the Assistant Secretary for Policy (OASP)

OASP is the principal policy, regulatory, data governance and evaluation office for the Department of Labor. OASP advises department leadership on actions to improve the lives of workers, retirees and their families

Office of the Chief Financial Officer (OCFO)

OCFO is responsible for the financial leadership of Department and upholding strong financial management and accountability.

Office of the Solicitor (SOL)

The Office of the Solicitor’s mission is to meet the legal service demands of the entire Department of Labor

Office of Workers' Compensation Programs (OWCP)

The OWCP administers four major disability compensation programs that provide wage replacement benefits, medical treatment, vocational rehabilitation and other benefits to certain workers or their dependents who experience work-related injury or occupational disease

Ombudsman for the Energy Employees Occupational Illness Compensation Program (EEOMBD)

The Office of the Ombudsman for the EEOICPA is committed to supporting civilian nuclear weapons workers, their families, and associated stakeholders as they navigate the EEOICPA workers' compensation claims process. We answer questions, provide information and guidance, and receive complaints and concerns while maintaining confidentiality, independence, and neutrality. The Office carries out its mission with an appreciation of the work performed and sacrifices made by those covered under the EEOICPA.

Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation (PBGC)

The Office of the Ombudsman for the EEOICPA is committed to supporting civilian nuclear weapons workers, their families, and associated stakeholders as they navigate the EEOICPA workers' compensation claims process. We answer questions, provide information and guidance, and receive complaints and concerns while maintaining confidentiality, independence, and neutrality. Veterans' Employment and Training Service (VETS)

VETS mission is to prepare America's veterans, service members, and military spouses for meaningful careers, provide them with employment resources and expertise, protect their employment rights, and promote their employment opportunities.

Wage and Hour Division (WHD)

The Wage and Hour Division mission is to promote and achieve compliance with labor standards to protect and enhance the welfare of the nation's workforce.

Women's Bureau (WB)

Women in the workforce are vital to the nation’s economic security. The Women’s Bureau champions policies and standards that safeguard the interests of working women, advocates for the equality and economic security of women and their families, and promotes quality work environments.
