The Bostock Plaintiffs

Gerald Bostock, Donald Zarda, and Aimee Stephens

Gerald Bostock and Donald Zarda faced job termination due to their sexual orientation, and Aimee Stephens was fired for being transgender. They challenged this discrimination through lawsuits invoking Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, contending it covers gender identity and sexual orientation. Their persistence paid off in 2020 when the Supreme Court ruled in their favor, affirming that Title VII does indeed protect against such discrimination.

This landmark ruling ensures protection for all workers, irrespective of their sexual orientation. Bostock, Zarda, and Stephens' victory marked a crucial moment in LGBTQ+ rights and American labor history, serving as inspiration for millions and highlighting the power of workers' voices in shaping history when they stand up for their beliefs, even in the face of daunting challenges.
